Hunting Season Info

🏔️ Where You’ll Be Hunting

Pagosa Springs lies in Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) Game Management Units (GMUs) 77, 78, and 771, covering parts of the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness.

Terrain & Elevation:

  • Elevation ranges from 7,000–12,000 ft, offering diverse landscapes — meadows, thick timber, and alpine ridges.
  • Weather can shift quickly. Snow, wind, or mud are common even in early seasons, especially near Wolf Creek Pass.
  • Access roads vary from paved highways to rough forest service tracks — a 4WD vehicle or ATV is highly recommended.

🎯 Major Game Species

Pagosa’s healthy wildlife populations make it a top draw for hunters across the U.S.

Elk (Rocky Mountain)
Archery (late Aug–Sept), Rifle (Oct–Nov). OTC bull tags available in certain units.

Mule Deer
Limited draw only — plan and apply early through CPW.

Black Bear
Often combined with archery or muzzleloader elk hunts. Requires additional license and harvest reporting.

Turkey
Spring and Fall seasons. Excellent Merriam’s habitat in lower elevations along US-84 and Blanco Basin.

🗓️ Seasons & Licensing

  • Licenses & Tags: Purchase or apply through Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) bull elk licenses are available for many units.
  • Mule deer, cow elk, and bear tags are limited and require draw or leftover purchase.
  • Application Deadlines: Typically April for big game draws.
  • Hunter Education: Required for anyone born after Jan 1, 1949.
  • Habitat Stamp: Mandatory for all licenses.

Tip: Always double-check the latest CPW regulations for season dates, weapon restrictions, and GMU boundaries before your hunt.

🚙 Access & Travel Tips

  • Main access routes: US-160 (through town and east toward Wolf Creek Pass) and US-84 (south toward Chromo and New Mexico).
  • Forest Service Roads: Many roads close during wet or snowy conditions — check San Juan National Forest road updates before departure.
  • Cell service: Limited in the backcountry; consider offline maps or GPS units like OnX Hunt or Gaia GPS.
  • Camping: Dispersed camping is allowed in most National Forest areas, or stay in local cabins and ranch accommodations for added comfort.

🪵 What to Pack

  • Blaze orange vest & hat (required during rifle seasons)
  • Waterproof boots & gaiters
  • Layered clothing (for 20°F mornings and 60°F afternoons)
  • GPS / offline map / compass
  • Extra fuel, food, and tire chains if driving mountain passes
  • Game bags, tarp, and rope for field dressing & packing out

🦅 Ethics & Safety

  • Always identify your target and what’s beyond it.
  • Respect private property boundaries — ask permission when in doubt.
  • Pack out all trash and spent shells.
  • Follow fire restrictions when camping.
  • Report poaching or illegal activity to Operation Game Thief (1-877-265-6648).

🧭 Local Resources

  • Colorado Parks & Wildlife Office: Durango Regional Office — (970) 247-0855
  • San Juan National Forest Office (Pagosa Ranger District): (970) 264-2268
  • Meat Processing: Multiple local butchers and wild game processors available in Pagosa Springs.
  • Gear & Supplies: Ski & Bow Rack (Pagosa), and local outfitters on US-160.
  • Guided Hunts: Several licensed outfitters in the area offer drop camps, horseback access, and guided hunts in GMUs 77–78.

🏕️ After the Hunt

Unwind in true Pagosa fashion —

  • Soak in your private wood burning hot tub on your Cabin patio, or the Pagosa Hot Springs to ease sore muscles.
  • Grab a hearty meal at the 84 Ranch Farm Market + Picnic Bistro
  • Explore scenic drives through Wolf Creek Pass or the Blanco Basin before heading home.

🪓 Final Tips

  • Expect altitude to affect endurance — pace yourself and hydrate.
  • Keep your vehicle winter-ready; mountain weather changes fast.
  • Arrive early to scout, learn access points, and adjust to the elevation.
Skiiers & Winter Travelers - Wolf Creek Pass
🏔️ The Mountain
  • Wolf Creek Ski Area is perched at the top of the pass—one of Colorado’s most beloved and least crowded ski destinations.
  • It’s famous for getting the most snow in Colorado, averaging over 430 inches per year. Powder days are frequent, and terrain varies from mellow groomers to steep tree runs and bowls.
  • Elevation: 10,300 ft base / 11,904 ft summit — expect thinner air and strong sun exposure.

Route: US-160 (Wolf Creek Pass) connects Pagosa Springs (west) to South Fork (east).

❄️Winter Driving Tips:
  • Check road conditions before leaving. Wolf Creek Pass can close temporarily for snow control or avalanches.
👉 COtrip.org posts live road & closure updates.
  • Carry traction devices or AWD/4WD with snow tires. Colorado’s Traction Law (Code 15) often goes into effect during snowstorms.
  • Start early. The pass can get socked in during afternoon storms, and parking fills fast on powder days.
  • Fuel up in Pagosa Springs or South Fork — there are no gas stations on the pass itself.
  • Cell service is spotty on the climb, so download maps and offline weather reports.

☕ Before You Go
  • Hydrate & acclimate. At nearly 12,000 ft, altitude sickness is common—take it easy on day one.
  • Pack layers. Weather can change fast; it’s not unusual to start sunny and end in a snow squall.
  • Sunscreen is a must. UV exposure is stronger at high altitudes, even on cloudy days.

🧭 Bonus Tips
  • Parking: Free, but fills early—arrive by 8 a.m. on weekends.
  • Lift tickets: More affordable than most Colorado resorts, but purchase online ahead for busy dates.
  • Avalanche awareness: If you’re venturing beyond ski boundaries, bring gear (beacon, shovel, probe) and check the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) forecast.
